The Guardian Eyewitness

Download Here

Name of Application: The Guardian Eyewitness

Cost: Free

Pros: The guardian eyewitness application is a great application that provides extraordinary pictures each day of an event that is happening around the world. The application not only shows the picture but a description of what and where something is happening. One of the main benefits of this application is the fact that it is free but I find that the pictures that you look at make you wonder a little bit more about what is happening and sparks the want to learn.

Cons: The application uploads one new picture each day. However, if want to see more than one new picture a day you have to pay for the application. Also, the description about what is happening in the picture is brief and doesn't go into much detail. If you wanted to learn more about the event you would have to research it on your own.

How to use in education: I would use this application daily with my students to allow for some creative writing. I would put the picture up on my SmartBoard and then students would journal about what they think is happening in the picture, what the person in the picture might be thinking, where they think the event might be happening, etc.. Once the students are done writing about the picture we would talk about what is actually happening in the picture and have a mini discussion about it. I like the fact that there are so many different types of pictures and therefore students are not only writing but learning about social studies, science, or even math. The pictures will allow students to become more cultured and aware of what is happening in the world they live in.

  1. Since the day I downloaded this app, I have used it on the regular. The pictures and news stories this app includes are amazing! There are so many different activities you can implement using this app, and it is a great resource for current events taking place across the globe. The only negative I have found was that there is only one picture uploaded a day on the free version. Overall, this app is a great find and is packed with interesting info.

  2. I downloaded this app, and I amazed by the beautiful pictures. They are stunning. What I also like about the app is that it contains a news story with every picture. This would be a great way to open a lesson for students or even as an activity in itself. There are a variety of ways this app can be used. This is app is very similar to the National Geographic Today, except it does not have video. If the photographers who do the photos for this app would to do the videos, then they would be amazing. The only con that I see with this app is there is some nudity with the pictures. Unfortunately, many parents may go crazy if they see something like that. This can be remedied by a letter being sent home or the teacher choosing a photo each day. This is a great app that I will definitely use in my classroom.

  3. I love the pictures that this app provides. You can choose an picture and have them write what they think about the picture. Then when they are done, you can read them the story that goes with the picture. I think that this would be a great way to get student's brains going and making them think. I would definitely use this in my classroom, and it is free which makes it even better.
