Backyard Tracks and Scat
Cost: FREE!
Link: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/backyard-scat-tracks/id353499165?mt=8
Pros:
This application has many positives other than that it is free! Once you get into the application there are 15 different well know North American animals. When you click on one of the animals, they application has a ton of information on each animal. (overview, large picture of their track, what their trail looks like, what their scat looks like, what a typical habitat is like, similar species to it, and other signs like rubbings to help identify them)
Cons:
Unfortunately, their are only 15 animals I wish there were more! I also could not get the region portion of the application to load. If this would work, it would be cool to see where in North America they are more prevalent.
How I would use it in my classroom:
This is a great application to use in a science lesson! Josh and I will be using it with our students at Stormonth Elementary while teaching the students about winter wildlife and tracks!

I believe this is a very useful application that I can actually see myself using in one of our future Stormmath lesson plans! I also believe this application would be better if there was more of a variety in the animals that they chose to present in the application. Though there is not much of a variety I believe this application would be best suited to introduce the topic of animal tracks to students. After reviewing this app I was unable to find a comparable app that did not cost money. Overall a great app to use in the classroom!
ReplyDeleteI like this app! I can see myself using it for a science unit! The only thing that I would change about this app is that there should be more than 15 animals tracks. But this could be part of a center or a study group. Where groups could have books about tracks and one group have this app and rotate. This seems like a cool app to introduce tracks!!
